ASTM A 1011/A 1011M-07 Drawing Quality Hot Rolled DS type A & B Steels

There are two types of drawing quality hot rolled steels defined by the American standard, these are DS type A and DS type B steels.

Chemical Composition of DS Type A Material: The drawing quality hot rolled steel has chemical composition as defined below:

Maximum Carbon content is 0.08 % of this type of steel.Maximum Manganese percentage is 0.5 %.

Maximum Phosphorous is 0.02 %.

Maximum Silica is 0.03 %.

Maximum Aluminum is 0.01 %.

Rest percentage is of iron.

Chemical Composition of DS Type B Material: Only the lower limit of Carbon is defined in this type of material i.e. 0.02% and the upper limit is 0.08%. Remaining chemical content maximum percentage limit is same as DS type A material.

Mechanical Properties of DS Type A & B Steels: The range of mechanical properties for DS type A & B steels is defined similarly as one designation, despite slight variation. The minimum elongation required is 28 % where as the yield strength is 205-310 MPa. The American Standard unlikely the Japanese & International standard focuses on yield strength rather tensile strength, since the plastic region is equally important for such materials.
